This is the day where his efforts, support, love and wisdom are acknowledged. The origins of Fathers Day are unclear but it has been thought that Mrs. John B. Dodd of Washington, first proposed the idea of a “father’s day” in 1909. Mrs Dodd wanted a special day to honor her father, William Smart. He was a civil war veteran widowed when his wife died in childbirth with their sixth child.
Mr. Smart was then left to raise the newborn and his other five children by himself at a time when it was very unusual for Fathers to be so involved in their children’s upbringing. It was only after Mrs John B. Dodd herself became a mother that she realized the strength and selflessness her father had shown in raising his children as a single parent. So Father's Day was born in memory and from gratitude by a daughter who thought that her father and all good fathers should be honored with a special day just like we honor our mothers on Mother's Day. It is our opportunity on the first Sunday in September to Celebrate Dad.
A tradition has developed where on this day Fathers are made to feel special, showered with gifts, taken to dinner or otherwise. Father’s Day has become the day to honor your father and those other father figures in your life.
